Above Baščaršija the old residential quarters, the mahalas, climb the hillsides on both sides of the Miljacka, from Kovači and Vratnik on the north side to Bistrik on the south. Homes here are often traditional houses with gardens; the reward for the steep lanes is a walk to the bazaar and a view over the whole city.
